Best Scroll Saws of 2024

This review is aimed at showing the best scroll saws. If you are interested in getting a scroll saw for your workshop, you should read through this review, so you know the best scroll saws out there.

When it comes to scroll saws, there are three general types to choose from, each with their own pros and cons. Regardless of the type of scroll saw that you choose, almost all models will be corded ones that run from a power outlet.

Arm Type

The connection between the motor and work is termed as arm. It mounts the blade and allows for proper cutting to be done.

In general, this scroll saw is available in three types of arm – Parallel Type, Parallel linked and C-Arm. Let’s know them in detail.

  • Parallel Type Arm

It has two arms in which they combine in the middle pivot point of each arm. It makes the arm to travel at a same time. The lower part of the arm is connected to motor under the worktable of the scroll saw.

The upper part will run on the top of worktable and has mount on the front arm to connect the blade. These arms (lower and upper) will meet at the back of scroll saw and allow the blade to work in reciprocating motion (up and forward).

  • Parallel Linked Arm

It is a new version that comes with minimal vibrations. The saw’s blade lies between the lower and upper arm. They pivot the reciprocating motion and make the blade to replicate its motion to cut.

The arm of this parallel linked is shorter than other two types and thereby results in back to front movement. Also, this arm type is found in high-end / modern scroll saws.

  • C Type Arm

It contains one pivot point that allows the blade to move in upwards and downwards along with moving in a slight arc. It is the most aggressive arm type than others, why because it provides a faster cut.

So, it is mostly found in experienced woodworkers (who have high levels of skill to provide high level of accuracy).

Scroll saws have a wide range when it comes to price, build quality and features. Some models can go for as low as $50, while some of the more premium models can go for $400 or more.

The dimensions of the scroll saw matters – shorter scroll saws with dual-link parallel arms, for example, are quieter and impart less vibration on the blade. That said, the main consideration you want to see is the Thickness of Cut and Throat Length.

  • The Thickness of Cut:

Is generally measured in inches and is the vertical height between the upper arm (plus the shoe) and the table. It determines the maximum thickness of material that you can work with using that particular machine.

Most models can accommodate pieces up to two inches thick, and scroll saws are generally designed to shape material up to 3 1/4 inch thick.

  • Throat Length:

Gives the distance between the saw blade and the back of the saw, which also determines the size of the project that you can work with on the table of your machine.

The speeds of scroll saws are usually given in terms of strokes per minute. Most models also come with variable speed motors, and manufacturers often cite the maximum strokes per minute that their machine is capable of.

Slower speeds are usually selected for softer woods, paper, and plastics, with higher speeds generally used for hardwood, metal and other harder substances.

Depth of Cut

The cut depth will determine the thickness of wood pieces your saw will able to cut. The standard depth is about 2 inches. Some models come with larger capabilities than this but most of the scroll saw’s woodwork done on finish wood which won’t require larger cut depth.

Scroll saws are powered by electric motors, and like with most power tools, their power is usually rated in terms of volts or amps.

In general, power is not as important a consideration for scroll saws as it is in other power tools, except perhaps if your projects will make use of scroll saws to cut metal and stone pieces.

Vibration and Noise

The better scroll saw models are machines that you can run inside the house, and generally, the noise that they put out is slightly louder than a normal conversation. Less vibration also means cleaner cuts and fewer mistakes, as well.

Lights can help you in two different ways. The first is, of course, that they illuminate your workspace. Secondly, some saws feature guiding lights to help you make precise and accurate cuts.

A blower is a simple device with one purpose: to rid your workspace of sawdust. This contributes to keeping your workspace clear and dust-free.

Dust collection.

If you have a blower, you will also want a dust collection bag. This bag will catch the sawdust so that it is not just spread all over your workshop once it is blown off.

The Cutting Surface

Almost all scroll saws have a built-in cutting tab or table that you can use to properly align whatever you are cutting. However, the size of the board will vary based on the model you are using, and you can’t really swap them out easily without some extreme DIY.

Since the blade is generally in the center of these cutting surfaces, it is not always that important to get the largest one available, but having one that is too small will make any kind of cutting work more awkward.

Remember that some saws can be attached to tables or other surfaces, increasing their stability much further than usual. Others might have deployable stands or legs that help them stay upright for much longer, too.

This isn’t something you will find very often, but it can be extremely useful if you often need to use your scroll saw in multiple different locations.

Many scroll saw cutting tables will also bevel or rotate a certain amount to let you create angled cuts – different models will have different bevel limitations and systems, and not all of them will give you a true level of “free” rotation, relying on pre-set points instead.

Ease of Use

All tools will have multiple different levels of complexity, with some being much easier to use than others even if they are by the same manufacturer.

Because of this, it can take a while to find something that is perfect for your skill level, and scroll saws are no exception.

Finding the best scroll saw isn’t just a matter of choosing one with the best features or components, but picking a model that is ideal for your level of skill and the tools you have available at the time.

One important feature worth noting is the “tool-free” blade holder designs, which give you a way to remove blades without having to remove screws or employ any other kinds of tools.

This not only takes far less time but also makes the scroll saw more of a standalone tool that can be used on its own, rather than forcing you to carry around a toolbox in case you need to swap out blades or adjust their angles.

Tool-less blade changes.

This is an attractive feature that allows you to make quick and easy changes to your blade without having to pull out extra tools or a key to access it. It makes your life a little easier, which is always good.

Worktable size.

You should make sure the size of your work table is big enough for the type of projects you are working on at the time. If you do varying project sizes, try to get a saw that can handle your largest ones or has extensions.

Hold down foot.

This is the part of the saw that keeps your wood in place while you work. You need to make sure this piece is reliable because if your wood slips while you work, it could cause a costly mistake. With especially delicate scrollwork, this is a massive issue.

PORTER-CABLE 18″ Scroll Saw with Stand

The PCB375SS scroll saw provides the power and precision cuts you need for detailed projects. With variable speeds between 500-1,500-SPM, quick blade changes, and upfront controls, you can easily change blades and speeds during a project as well as adjust the blade tension and work light easily. A dual-tilt table allows up to 45 degree cuts and the tabletop bevel scale provides more accurate angles.

Another great plus is the slack control. This helps you relieve or increase tension and makes it much easier to remove and replace a blade. There are some cons to this tool. First, the light over the work area could be a bit brighter. It’s there, but the wattage is a bit low. Also, the blade’s motor has a bit of a stutter at lower speeds, but gets smoother as the speed is raised.
The first plus for this saw is the price. When it comes to scroll saws, woodworkers don’t want the cheapest thing on the market, but there’s no reason to go broke buying a new tool.
