Finding the best drills out there, can be quite tasking, we know this, that is why we have taken time to research on the best drills.  If  you own a workshop, and you need to get the best drills, you are at the right place. We have reviewed them below, so read through to have a grasp on the best drills. So you make the right choices.

BUYER’S GUIDE

Corded or cordless?

Corded drills are often lighter than their cordless cousins as there is no heavy battery pack. If you opt for a mains powered, corded drill, you will also need to use an extension lead. A cordless drill will give greater mobility as you can take it anywhere without having to tow an extension cable behind you. However, the most powerful cordless tools are usually more expensive than their corded equivalents.

From lithium-ion batteries to brushless motors, there are a few options to consider when choosing your drill.

Lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are now used in most cordless drills – as well as being safer for the environment, they are also lightweight and more powerful than older style batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries allow you to charge the battery whenever you want to, no matter how full or empty it is. Plus, they have no self-discharge. This means that if you put away a fully charged tool for a long time in between your DIY jobs – it’ll still be ready to use whenever you need it.

If you’ve chosen a cordless drill, you may want to pick up a spare battery, enabling you to swap a dead battery for one that has been charging during larger projects.

Charger and Charge Indicator

Early Li-ion batteries often needed to be charged and used under precise conditions to ensure peak performance. But the newest generation of batteries and chargers prevents overcharging batteries, alleviating the need to drain them fully between charges to ensure the longest possible life.

New chargers also include an indicator light, which clearly displays how close the battery is to a full charge. Some brands also have indicator lights on the batteries themselves.

Brushless motors

This means the drill’s motor has been constructed in such a way that it reduces friction and heat build-up, resulting in better torque control and faster speeds. Choosing a drill with a brushless motor helps to increase the lifespan of the motor.

‘Keep Cool Technology’

The Erbauer range of lithium-ion battery powered tools boasts ‘Keep Cool Technology’. It keeps the battery cells cool so they don’t overheat and the result is a longer battery run time and increased battery lifetime.

One-battery tools

One -battery tools powers multiple tools, from the same range. Once you have the battery and charger, you simply buy the tool to extend your own range of power tools. When you see ‘bare tool’ in the product description, you know it comes without the battery.

Having one battery power different tools helps to save money on additional batteries and chargers that you don’t need. If you use your power tools frequently, it’s worth investing in a spare battery to keep your project moving.

Chuck Size

Most cordless drills come with either a ½-inch or a ⅜-inch chuck. The size tells you two important things about a drill. First, it provides an upper limit for the shank size of the bits the drill can accommodate.

Bigger bits often have wider shanks, so a heavy-duty paddle bit that you’d use for mixing grout or joint compound wouldn’t fit into a drill with a small chuck. Second, chuck size also tracks closely to a drill’s power and capability—more powerful drills usually have larger chucks and vice versa.

Power

Cordless drill power is measured in volts, with the most powerful models being up to 20 volts. Most home users will be happy with a drill in the 12-16 volt range. As a warning, the higher the voltage of the drill, the heavier it will be.

Corded drill power is measured in amps, with power increasing as the amperage rises. An 8-amp corded drill is great for home use.

Speed

Some drills have multiple speed options, with the lower speed being for driving screws and the higher speed being for drilling holes. If the primary use of your drill will be to drill holes, a single speed drill in the 1000 rpm range will fit the bill.
